Hike to the World Famous Sechelt Rapids

Sechelt Rapids

Skookumchuck Rapids
Just across the bay is the trailhead that leads to Skookumchuck Narrows. Here, a short 4 km hike through mature coastal forests takes you to Sechelt Rapids, a world famous tidal flow. On the ebb tide large eddies form as water races out of Sechelt Inlet. During the flood tide as water flows into the Inlet large standing waves develop.
Stand on the shore and see the incoming water rise up to 9 feet above your head. During heavy flows the water moves at more than 16 knots (almost 30 km/h).

The hike to the rapids is on an gently undulating forested trail. A round trip will require approximately 2 hours plus the time spent at the rapids.

Kayaking the Rapids
If you are lucky to arrive during a large flood tide you will often find extreme kayakers playing in the waves.

Best Viewing Times

The best times to visit varies with the tide.  Large tidal changes create the largest rapids.  Ebb tides produce large eddies while flood tides create the large standing waves that kayakers play in.
