It’s a crisp and frosty day. With his iridescent black feathers he stands in stark contrast to the snowy backdrop.

The Black-billed Magpie is an incredibly adaptable bird that can be found across a wide range of habitats. They are predominantly found in the western parts of North America. Their range stretches from Alaska and western Canada down through the western United States, including areas like Alberta, Montana, and Colorado. They are often seen in open habitats, such as grasslands and agricultural areas. In the winter they often move into urban settings to take advantage of food sources and shelter. In the summer they spread out into rural and urban areas to breed.

Magpies are not only bold and territorial but also remarkably intelligent. They are known for their problem-solving abilities and complex social structures. In fact, magpies are one of the few non-mammalian species that can recognize themselves in a mirror, indicating a high level of self-awareness. They have been observed using tools, caching food for later use, and even playing games with each other. This intelligence often manifests in their interactions with other animals, including their strategic harassment of pet cats. Their cunning and adaptability make them fascinating creatures that continue to captivate researchers and bird enthusiasts alike.
