Description

Bonaparte’s Gulls are dabbling gulls that can pluck tiny fish from the water with ease. They dart across the surface at a rapid rate and suddenly drop into the water, emerging with a small fish or crustacean. They have amazing agility, being able to chase and catch insects in flight. During the breeding season adults have black heads. In the winter this turns into a gray smudge as can be seen in the birds pictured.

It is difficult to capture these birds in motion. They move fast, performing rapid acrobatic turns as they search out, spot, and capture their next meal.
